Emergency Treatment for Ankle Sprain in the Elderly

A practical guide from China's National Health Commission

Ankle sprains are common among the elderly. Prompt and correct first aid can reduce pain and prevent further injury. This guide presents the recommended emergency steps.

Independently written English guidance based on cited public sources. Every public guide is human reviewed; it is not an official translation of the source publisher.

Immediate Steps

Stop walking, exercising, or working immediately and sit or lie down. Elevate the injured foot with padding to facilitate venous return and reduce swelling and pain.

Apply ice bags or cold towels to the injured area right away to constrict capillaries and reduce bleeding or exudation, which helps decrease swelling and pain. If no ice cubes are available, crushed ice sticks or ice cream can be used.

Bandaging and Immobilization

Use bandages, triangular bandages, or wide tape to compress and immobilize the ankle joint, wrapping from the sole of the foot to the ankle and dorsum. This limits motion and reduces traction on injured ligaments or muscles, helping to prevent worsening of the injury.

Suspected Fracture

If a fracture is suspected, place two pieces of wood or cardboard about 30 cm long on both sides of the injured area, with cotton pads or towels for padding, and secure them with bandages or triangular bandages. Then seek medical attention for diagnosis and treatment.

Important Cautions

Do not massage the injury or apply hot compresses immediately. Hot compresses should only be started after 24 hours.
